Launching a nationwide awareness drive for returning unclaimed financial assets from Gujarat on Saturday, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said a total of ₹1.84 lakh crore was lying in government’s “safe-custody” in the form of bank deposits, mutual funds, insurance proceeds, dividend and pension funds.
“Decades have passed when people in the know of things have voiced the feeling that unclaimed monies lying with banks, or RBI (Reserve Bank of India) or IEPF (Investor Education and Protection Fund) needs to be handed over to the rightful owner or claimants. It is their money,” said Sitharaman while inaugurating the”Aapki Poonji, Aapka Adhikar “ campaign for returning the money lying with the government to the citizens.
