Chelsea came out on top in a wild match against Liverpool Saturday, with a thrilling 2-1 game in the English Premier League going the hosts' way at Stamford Bridge.

Moisés Caicedo fired a thunderbolt home to give the Blues a first-half lead, but a renewed Liverpool equalized midway through the second half thanks to Cody Gakpo. With a wide-open approach from two short-handed teams creating plenty of drama, Chelsea claimed the game-winner six minutes into stoppage time as Estêvão found the back of the net.

The celebrations on the 18-year-old's late winner were intense enough that Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was given a second yellow card and sent off, but that didn't dampen the mood for the Blues, who moved up to sixth place with the win.

That's a big help, as Chelsea had lost three of their last six matches in all competitions, all coming in the last three weeks. With four center backs missing due to injury or suspension, it looked like more bad news was coming as this match played out. Benoît Badiashile and Josh Acheampong both came off with new injuries, but an ad-hoc Chelsea team still had enough to find a dramatic breakthrough.

The defeat adds to the feeling that something is off at Liverpool. Despite outspending all of their rivals to bolster the squad that won the Premier League last season, the Reds have now gone three straight matches without a win, something that hasn't happened to the club since the late stages of the 2022-23 season.

Chelsea vs. Liverpool: Chelsea wins at the death

Estêvão's 96th-minute strike has done the job, with Chelsea claiming a 2-1 win after a wide-open match.

Stamford Bridge is delirious as the Blues, down six center backs by game's end, has defeated the Premier League champions. That means Arsenal is now atop the table, and Liverpool have their first three-game winless run since April 2023.

Goal Chelsea! Estevao provides dramatic winner

Estêvão couldn't get an assist, so he went ahead and scored a game-winner.

We're over five minutes into second-half stoppage time, and the teenager is unmarked to stab home a lovely ball across the goalmouth from Marc Cucurella.

It's shoddy defensive work from Liverpool, but what a moment for the Blues.

Chelsea hits post in stoppage time

That might have been the moment for Chelsea.

Estêvão's bending cross picked out the run no one from Liverpool saw coming, with Enzo Fernández arriving at the back post. However, the World Cup winner had to adjust in mid-air as he met the service, nodding the delivery off the post and out of danger. So close to a last-gasp winner.

Liverpool makes final change

Alexis Mac Allister makes way for Wataru Endo, and that's that for the substitutions on both sides.

Chelsea vs. Liverpool: Substitutions abound

Lots to catch up on here.

Liverpool makes the straightforward change, replacing Alexander Isak with Hugo Ekitike up front.

Chelsea opted for a triple change, with Marc Guiu, Jamie Gittens, and Estêvão all entering. João Pedro, Alejandro Garnacho, and Pedro Neto have come off as Enzo Maresca has refreshed his attack in a game that is becoming increasingly frantic.

Chelsea forced into another injury-related substitution

Chelsea has had to substitute both starting center backs due to injury, with Josh Acheampong having to limp off in the 67th minute. Jorrel Hato has replaced him, but this is becoming a difficult situation for Enzo Maresca at center back.

Acheampong follows Benoît Badiashile in having to leave this match with a knock, while Trevoh Chalobah is out with a suspension. Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Wesley Fofana were all unavailable to play in this match due to injury.

Goal, Liverpool! Gakpo equalizes

Some of Liverpool's changes have panned out, and it's Dominik Szoboszlai — now filling in at right back — who plays the killer ball into the area as Cody Gakpo scores a 63rd-minute equalizer.

There's fortune involved: Szoboszlai's cross clipped Marc Cucurella on its way into the box, and Alexander Isak's attempt to set himself up for a strike went all wrong...but Gakpo was quick to react, capitalizing on an improved second-half showing for the visitors.

Chelsea, Liverpool both make changes

Benoît Badiashile has a thigh injury and can't continue, so Chelsea is making a substitution. Roméo Lavia has come on in the 55th minute, with Reece James having to fill in as an unconventional center back as a result.

Meanwhile, Liverpool sends on Andrew Robertson and Curtis Jones, removing Milos Kerkez and Ibrahima Konaté. That's three changes to the Liverpool back line already.

Chelsea vs. Liverpool: Second half begins

Liverpool is turning to Florian Wirtz, an uber-costly summer addition that found himself benched to start this match, shuffling things up with a substitution as the second half begins.

Wirtz is in his typical attacking midfield role, with Dominik Szoboszlai moving to right back as this game gets back underway at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea vs. Liverpool: Blues lead 1-0

Chelsea have been sharp, and lead Liverpool 1-0 in this major Premier League clash.

Moisés Caicedo's powerhouse strike in the 14th minute gave Chelsea the lead, and they've more or less dominated since then. Liverpool has managed just two shot attempts, and one required a pass-of-the-season contender from Mohamed Salah (with Alexander Isak heading over).

The Red haven't met expectations thus far this season, and without an improvement in the second half we could see them go three games without a win for the first time since the late stages of the 2022-23 season.

Goal Chelsea! Moises Caicedo powers Blues ahead

Moisés Caicedo has given Chelsea the lead, and that's one for the highlight reel.

It looked dangerous the moment Caicedo danced past Alexis Mac Allister and stormed forward, but the Ecuador midfielder rarely scores. With Liverpool backing off to take away his options, Caicedo feinted once before thundering an unstoppable shot from 24 yards past Giorgi Mamardashvili.
