Le Roy History: Le Roy helped drive the Erie Canal

People in Le Roy may not realize that the Erie Canal, in Brockport, had strong ties with the community of Le Roy and the Le Roy family.

On July 4, 1817, in Rome, N.Y., the first shovel of dirt was dug for the Erie Canal. It certainly was a symbolic gesture, for the route had not been verified — funding was not guaranteed.
