Although two positions on the Vancouver Public Schools board appear on the Nov. 4 ballot, only one is contested.

Incumbent Wendy Smith, 49, has served on the school board since 2017 and said she’s seeking reelection because public education is a high priority for her. She faces challenger Larry Roe, 69, who lost a 2023 bid against Tracie Barrows.

Roe said he is running again because he thinks there is “an opportunity to improve the management of the district.”

Smith attended Vancouver schools from kindergarten through high school. She received an associate degree from Clark College, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington and a Master of Education from Washington State University Vancouver.

She has worked in public education for 23 years, 21 years as a classroom assistant
