Ted Streatfeild is on a mission to save the lives of kangaroos and possums on the Monaro Highway - and a mission to save Canberrans money and heartbreak.

He's organised a petition to try to persuade animal welfare organisations, councils and the state government to fence off sections where animals and cars collide, with the animal coming off worst but the car coming off badly.

On one journey, he counted the amount of road kill on the road favoured by Canberrans heading to the snow or sea, and it totalled 140.

"Most of them occurred between Bredbo and Canberra. We were getting sick of seeing the dead animals year after year," he said.
