The Sarnia Sting’s comeback bid was too little, too late Friday.

They cut a four-goal deficit to one before losing 4-3 to the Niagara IceDogs before 4,086 fans at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

Sting goaltender Evan Maillet was hung out to dry too often during a sloppy second period in which the IceDogs did all their scoring.

“We started off really strong,” Sting captain Lukas Fischer said. “It was a great first period. The second period was a little bit of a struggle for us and then we came back in the third.

“It’s just a good learning experience. You’ve got to play 60 minutes of hockey. That’s a team that’s going to try to win this year. For us, it’s a look in the mirror and understand that it takes a full 60 minutes against a good team like that.”
