Police have set up a strike force after an elderly woman was found dead in her Western Sydney home on Saturday.

Irene Selmes, 84, was found dead in the bedroom of a home on Comet Street, Melonba after her family called emergency services about midday Saturday.

Police have been told the last time Irene's family saw her was the night before.

Detectives are now treating her death as suspicious and the Homicide Squad is investigating the circumstances under Strike Force Vado.

"She was located with injuries to her upper body,"

Acting Superintendent Gretchen Grove-Jones said.

"She was last seen at 9:30pm the previous evening.

"The family is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances."
