Just ten supermarkets control an eye-watering 96% of British grocery sales – meaning they’re in almost complete control of our food and farming. This near monopoly is disastrous for our health and bank balances, as well as for the climate and British farmers.

To further illustrate the point: 90% of Brits had shopped in one of the major supermarkets in the previous week, according to Foodrise ’s new YouGov polling of more than 2,000 adults.

But – despite how much time we spend in the supermarket aisles or loading up our virtual trolleys – almost half of Brits (45%) think supermarkets do a bad job of both promoting local food products and helping you to cut down on food waste. And they’re right.
