COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - According to Sheriff Greg Countryman, two people were apprehended after a vehicle was traveling over the speed limit Saturday night.

A heavy police presence was reported near South Lumpkin Road near the Oxbow Meadows Saturday night around 10:25 p.m. Sheriff Countryman says a Corvette was traveling at 100 mph when it fled from Sheriff’s Deputies.

Countryman says the chase was called off.

The driver of the Corvette allegedly turned off his headlight to continue into Fort Benning at a high rate of speed when it hit a curb at a roundabout and landed into a woodland where the vehicle caught fire.

The driver and passenger fled on foot and they were both apprehended at the scene, according to Sheriff Countryman.
