Fox Chapel athletic director Michael O’Brien continues using player safety to tout what he perceives as a groundbreaking pathway for the WPIAL to institute a competitive balance formula into its football alignment.

His idea is to break the WPIAL into seven leagues using a formula that includes wins, losses, weighted wins and losses taking into account classification sizes of participants and roster size. It also opens the door for a return to the WPIAL for schools currently playing independent schedules.

It sounds amazing. O’Brien certainly thinks so. This is the third variation he’s come up with in the last two years that he’s attempted to sell to the WPIAL brass.

Only it’s completely and utterly flawed.
