Regarding the editorial, " America's history — scars and all — must not be sanitized " (Sept. 19): Please consider some more nuanced perspectives.

First, it is wise for any nation to pause, take stock and consider whether long-standing practices still serve the common good. That is the case here. President Donald Trump determined the government he was elected to run had lost sight of the greatness of America by focusing on some of its past sins.

Second, it is unwise to live in past mistakes. Lord knows I have plenty of experience here. Better I learn from them and then focus on my strengths to move in a positive direction. Again, this seems consistent with Trump’s actions.

Thirdly, in general I struggle with the emphasis on groups in America (gender, sexuality, race, nationality, etc.
