Rohit Sharma, who led the Indian men’s cricket team to the ICC Champions Trophy title in March 2025, was removed as ODI captain on October 4. The 38-year-old right-handed batter from Mumbai has been replaced by Shubman Gill. The world No. 1 ODI batter will play his first ODI as captain on October 19 in Perth against Australia.

The BCCI’s decision to sack Rohit as the ODI captain of Team India came as a shock for the fans on Saturday afternoon. While Rohit is yet to release any statement after losing his job as the captain of Team India, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that it was difficult to have three different captains for three different formats, which is why they decided to appoint Gill to take charge of the side ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
