Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed optimism about the imminent return of all hostages from the Gaza Strip. This announcement follows a significant development in peace negotiations, where Hamas has agreed to key elements of a peace plan proposed by former US President Donald Trump. The plan includes the release of all hostages and the transfer of Gaza's administration to a Palestinian body of independents, supported by Arab and Islamic nations.
In a statement to the media, Netanyahu said, "My brothers and sisters, citizens of Israel, we are on the verge of a very great achievement. It is not yet final; we are working on it diligently. I hope, with God’s help, that in the coming days, during the Sukkot holiday, I will be able to inform you about the return of all our hostages, both living and deceased."
He highlighted that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) remain active within Gaza, asserting that the military pressure has led to the return of 207 hostages so far. Netanyahu emphasized that he never lost hope of recovering all hostages since the October 7 attacks, during which Hamas captured 253 individuals. He stated, "Instead of Israel being isolated – Hamas is isolated."
Netanyahu outlined a two-stage plan for the situation in Gaza. In the first stage, all hostages will be released, and the IDF will maintain control over key areas in Gaza. The second stage involves disarming Hamas and demilitarizing the region, which could occur through diplomatic or military means.
He thanked Trump for his support, calling it a "historic achievement," and mentioned that a negotiating team would head to Egypt to finalize the details of the hostages' release. Trump also indicated that Israel has agreed to an initial withdrawal line in Gaza, with a ceasefire set to take effect once Hamas confirms the agreement.
In response to Trump's plan, Hamas has shown willingness to release all hostages and engage in discussions about the deal. However, despite calls for a halt to bombings, Israeli military operations continue in Gaza, with reports indicating at least 57 casualties from recent strikes, including 40 in Gaza City alone.
