Donald Trump’s order to scrub the stain of slavery from America’s national parks is an attempt to revert to the days of white supremacy and Black subservience.

His actions only underscore his bigotry, racism, and lack of human decency.

The President’s House in Philadelphia is particularly vexing for Trump and his lackeys. There, at Sixth and Market Streets, George Washington not only housed enslaved individuals in the basement of his presidential home but actually shuttled them back and forth between Philadelphia and Mt. Vernon every six months to circumvent Pennsylvania’s emancipation laws.

Washington achieved this by attempting to deceive both the enslaved individuals and the public, according to the official Mt. Vernon webpage, “in a way that will deceive both them and the public.”
