LEXINGTON, Ky. —

A federal investigation has found the University of Kentucky violated civil rights law.

The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) says the school broke federal law by participating in an academic program that "discriminates against students on the bases of race and national origin."

In a September letter sent to UK President Eli Capilouto, OCR said the university's partnership with The PhD Project, a nonprofit designed to help students from underrepresented groups obtain business degrees, violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The investigation began in March after a complaint alleged UK discriminated against students by supporting The PhD Project's annual conference.
