If you're feeling poorly with a razor-sharp sore throat and elevated temperatures, you may have contracted one of the fresh Covid strains that have been circulating this autumn.

The most prevalent variants currently spreading across the UK are XFG, also called Stratus, and NB.1.8. 1, known as Nimbus.

Medical experts have provided reassurance that these appear to present no greater risk than earlier forms of Covid or cause people to feel more unwell.

Nevertheless, the virus's recent genetic modifications may heighten the chances of infection and display somewhat different symptoms.
