Penn State lured defensive coordinator Jim Knowles away from Ohio State this offseason with a contract that reportedly made him the highest-paid coordinator in college football.

After he won a national championship and had nearly 40 years of college coaching experience, the $3.1 million deal seemed to make sense.

But Saturday, as No. 7 Penn State stunningly lost 42-37 to previously 0-4 UCLA, Knowles was bested. Badly.

And it came at the hands of a first-time play caller.

UCLA’s Jerry Neuheisel manned the headset and play sheet Saturday, something he’d never done before Wednesday of this past week. Neuheisel was the Bruins’ tight ends coach before the program and offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri announced they’d part ways late Tuesday night .
