Gary Mayor Eddie Melton and Republican Gov. Mike Braun were among the dignitaries who gathered on Thursday for a groundbreaking ceremony on the future site of a $60 million FedEx distribution center near Buffington Harbor.
The facility, which the Memphis-based corporation will lease from local developers, will measure 322,000 square feet and include over 100 docking positions for semitrailers.
The operation is expected to support some 600 jobs. When announcing the planned development during his April State of the City address, Melton said FedEx has committed to filling at least 20% of the new roles with Gary residents.
