ORANGEBURG, S.C. — A weekend of Homecoming celebrations at South Carolina State University turned tragic Saturday night after two separate shootings on campus left one person dead and another wounded.
The violence prompted a campus lockdown, the cancellation of a planned concert, and the suspension of classes on Monday.
Authorities said the first shooting happened near Hugine Suites, a student residential complex. A woman who was a guest on the campus was shot and taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died. A short time later, a second shooting took place involving a male guest who was airlifted to another hospital. His condition has not been released.
