Despite his fame, Spider-Man 's comics almost collapsed completely in the 1990s. Spider-Man is without a doubt Marvel’s most iconic hero, not only because of his powers or costume, but because Peter Parker has always been the most relatable character in the Marvel Universe. With an expansive rogues’ gallery and an endless list of adaptations and spinoffs, Spider-Man’s lore has grown into one of the richest in all of comics.

But even a hero this iconic has stumbled. Spider-Man’s publication history includes some of Marvel’s brightest storytelling triumphs, but also some of its most infamous failures. Although ups and downs are inevitable for a character with decades of history, Spider-Man’s lowest lows have been startlingly drastic compared to other superheroes.
