BROOKLINE, Mass. —

A Harvard University professor was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly fired a pellet gun near a Brookline temple, police said.

Carlos Gouvea was arrested and charged with illegally discharging a BB/pellet gun, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and malicious damage to personal property, police said.

Brookline police officers responded to Temple Beth Zion on Beacon Street Wednesday evening for a report of someone with a gun.

Private security guards, who were assigned to the temple during its Yom Kippur service, told police they heard two shots fired and saw Gouvea standing behind a tree, holding a pellet rifle.

According to a Brookline police report, one of the guards, Elijah O'Haver, got into a brief struggle with Gouvea in an attempt to detain him.
