Taylor Swift wanted every scene in The Fate of Ophelia music video to feel like a "live performance".
Last week, the superstar unveiled her twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl.
And on Sunday night, Taylor surprised fans again by dropping the video for lead single, The Fate of Ophelia, via YouTube.
In an Instagram post, the Opalite singer shared a slideshow of stills from the shoot and noted that many of the dancers featured also participated in her The Eras Tour shows.
"Writing, rehearsing, directing and shooting the music video for The Fate of Ophelia was the thrill of a lifetime because I got to be reunited with my Eras Tour family!!" she wrote. "I wanted each one-take scene to feel like a live performance and remind us all of how it felt to be at those shows together. Making every moment count. It's a journey through the chaotic world of show business."
Taylor went on to credit cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, production designer Ethan Tobman, and choreographer Mandy Moore for helping her to "dream up" the visuals.
"A huge thank you to this massive cast who kept it (100 percent) and also kept the secret of this video even existing. It's out on YouTube NOW!" the 35-year-old added.
In The Fate of Ophelia video, Taylor appears in a series of extravagant setups, beginning with a reference to British artist John Everett Millais's circa-1851 depiction of Ophelia, a character from William Shakespeare's play Hamlet.
Elsewhere, the popstar dons a platinum blonde wig and sequin costume to portray a classic showgirl as well as a brunette wig to play a 1960s go-go dancer.
"The idea I came up with for this music video was sort of a journey throughout all these different ways in which, over time periods, historically, you could be a showgirl," she explained after the video premiered at a theatrical presentation, according to Variety. "Like, how you would be in the public eye back during the 1800s, when you'd sit for a Pre-Raphaelite painting. Or you could be a showgirl by being a cabaret burlesque club performer. You could be a theatrical actor putting on a performance. You could a Vegas showgirl."
