Harjit or Sarabjit? US-deported grandma fights name muddle; she says it’s common in Punjab, no big deal

CHANDIGARH: Harjit Kaur, who was deported from the US last month after she had lived there for three decades, has spoken to TOI and cleared the confusion over her real name. When TOI contacted her on Sunday, Harjit said: "My name, as per birth records and other papers, is Sarabjit. Some family members also call me Harjit. Not everyone calls me by Harjit, but some do. It is not a big deal. Even my ‘bharjai' (brother's wife) has different names in her parents' house and in-laws' house." TOI accessed a document issued by the additional district registrar (births and deaths), Tarn Taran district, which states her name as Sarabjit and gives her date of birth as Jan 5, 1952.
