SOPERTON, Ga. — One Treutlen County Schools students is dead and another is hurt after a shooting in Soperton Sunday afternoon, according to Police Chief Brian Scott.

Treutlen County Coroner Gregg Higgs says it happened in a residential area on New Street.

They say a 15-year-old was killed and a 17-year-old was taken to a trauma center after the shooting.

The deadly shooting has prompted a soft lockdown for students at Treutlen County Schools.

That means classes will continue as normal but students will have to go through weapon detectors when they arrive at school.

"This process may cause longer lines outside the building in the morning, so we ask for patience and understanding as we take extra precautions to ensure everyone’s safety," the district said.
