ENGLAND rugby legend Lewis Moody has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND).

The 47-year-old, who was part of the 2003 Rugby World Cup-winning side and captained the nation, broke down in tears when confirming he had the muscle-wasting disease.

The England legend discovered he had MND after noticing some weakness in his shoulder while training in the gym, reports the BBC.

After physiotherapy failed to improve the problem, a series of scans showed nerves in his brain and spinal cord had been damaged by MND.

Up to 5,000 adults in the UK are affected by the condition, with one in 300 at risk during their lifetimes, data from Brain Tumour Research states.

It slowly robs patients of the ability to walk, talk and eat, although every sufferer is different.
