Mumbai: The Mumbai Police has implemented a 30-day ban on the storage, sale and use of sky lanterns (flying lanterns) in the city. The ban has been implemented to ensure public safety during the ongoing festive season. The ban will remain in place from October 12 to November 10 in the Brihanmumbai Police Commissionerate area.

The ban order was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Akbar Pathan. The order read that the release of sky lanterns can create fire hazard and endanger public safety. The order added that these sky lanterns often get entangled in electric wires, or fall on vehicles, building rooftops which can cause fires or other accidents.
