NILES The Niles Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating the driver involved in a hit-and-run crash on Saturday night that claimed a woman's life.

Police responded to the area of Fifth Street and Indiana Avenue around 8:43 p.m. on Oct. 4 after the department's Dispatch Center received a 911 call about an unresponsive female in a yard.

Upon arrival, officers determined that a vehicle had initially driven off the roadway, struck a shed and a parked car. Investigators believe the injured woman, a neighbor, heard the initial crash and went outside to investigate. At that time, the vehicle’s driver was leaving the scene and struck the woman in the yard.

As of Monday morning, the woman has died of her injuries. Her identity is unknown at this time.
