Kwik Trip is changing its policies for cash transactions in response to the federal government stopping production of pennies.
The convenience store chain based in La Crosse, Wis. — with dozens of locations across Minnesota — says cash purchases will now be rounded down to the nearest five cents so that cashiers don’t need pennies for change.
“As stores run out of pennies by location, and since the Government has not provided guidance on how to proceed, all cash purchases at Kwik Trip and Kwik Star locations will be rounded down,” the company said in a press release. Business will continue the policy until a “permanent legislative solution” is passed.
Payments by credit or debit card will not be affected and will go through at the exact amount.
