Three people were injured in a massive fire at the waterfront home of a South Carolina judge over the weekend, officials said.
A home on Edisto Island owned by circuit court Judge Diane Goodstein was engulfed in a blaze on Saturday, Oct. 4, the South Carolina Judicial Branch confirmed to USA TODAY.
"Local law enforcement partners have been alerted and asked to provide extra patrols and security. The Judicial Branch will remain in close communication with (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division)," the court said in a statement, adding that South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice John Kittredge is aware of the incident.
Three people were hospitalized, including one who was air evacuated, K.C. Campbell, public information officer for the Colleton County Fire-Rescue, one of the departments that assisted in responding, confirmed to USA TODAY.
It's unclear who was home at the time of the incident. Goodstein is married to former state Sen. Arnold Goodstein, and the couple has two children, according to her judicial branch bio.
"Out of respect for the privacy of the Goodstein family, the South Carolina Judicial Branch will not be issuing any further comment until law enforcement concludes its investigation," the South Carolina Judicial Branch said in a subsequent statement issued on Oct. 6.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said in a statement to USA TODAY that is actively investigating the fire.
"More information may be available as the case continues," the statement said.
Home occupants were rescued via kayaks, officials say
Video of the fire shows huge plumes of smoke pouring out of the home.
The St. Paul's Fire District, which also assisted in responding, said in a statement that the home is located on a remote barrier island with "significant challenges such as limited water supply and tight areas."
The occupants of the home escaped by jumping from the first floor, which was elevated, the department said.
"Due to the remoteness and layout of the lot, the occupants had to be rescued from the backyard via kayaks and brought to Colleton County EMS where they received medical aid," the statement said.
Judge who owns home recently prosecuted DOJ case
Diane Goodstein has served as a judge for South Carolina's circuit courts since 1998, according to her judicial branch bio.
Most recently, Goodstein prosecuted a case involving the U.S. Department of Justice in September, according to court filings.
Over the summer, the DOJ asked the South Carolina Election Commission for copies of the state's voter registration list. In August, Anne Crook, a South Carolina voter, filed a lawsuit to prevent the election commission from giving her voter registration information to the DOJ, according to the Greenville News, part of the USA TODAY Network.
On Sept. 2, Goodstein granted Crook's motion for a temporary restraining order, according to court filings.
However, the South Carolina Supreme Court reversed Goodstein's decision in an order filed on Sept. 11 − meaning the commission could turn voter information to the DOJ, per Greenville News.
