NEWTON COUNTY, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The Newton County Sheriff says a bear believed to be responsible for mauling a Missouri man at a campground last week has been killed.
Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said in a news release that on Oct. 5, a bear was caught on a cellular camera at Sam's Throne Campground in the Ozark National Forest, just a few yards away from where a Springfield, Mo., man was attacked a few days earlier.
Officials previously confirmed the man's cause of death was ruled to be an "animal mauling"
Arkansas Game & Fish Commission personnel and the NCSO looked at photos and determined it to be the same bear photographed by the victim and encountered by another man at a roadside overlook just outside the campground in September.
