Darrel was born in Logan Utah to J. Whitney and Virginia Payne Floyd, the eldest of four children. He grew up in Logan and Providence, graduating from South Cache High School. He attended Utah State Agricultural College before enlisting in the U.S. Army; after completing his training in radar he served eleven months in Korea, where he gained an interest in Asian food. After his active duty he resumed his studies at Utah State University and served in the U.S. Army Reserve.
He met Karen Sorenson at Utah State University, and they married on 21 February 1958. He began working at Thiokol in 1958 where he was involved with nondestructive test, electronic maintenance, and retired Facilities Engineer. Simultaneously he served in the United States Coast
