New Delhi: The birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki, the author of the epic Ramayana, is celebrated beyond religious and cultural boundaries. The day is celebrated with great pomp across the country as a Hindu festival to recognise Valmiki’s contributions to Indian literature and culture.

This year, Valmiki Jayanti will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 7. Many states and union territories have declared a holiday to celebrate the birth anniversary of the great sage Valmiki. All educational institutions, including primary and secondary schools, will be closed on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti, also known as Pragati Diwas.
