AMES — The search committee tasked with identifying finalists to lead Iowa State University as its next president met in closed session Monday and after several hours of discussion narrowed down a pool of 78 applicants to eight semifinalists.

Those eight candidates will meet one at a time with the 12-member search committee virtually in closed session Oct. 20-22, after which the committee will choose finalists to visit the Ames campus the first week of November.

In narrowing down the pool of applicants, Board of Regents spokesman Josh Lehman told The Gazette the committee agreed by “consensus” on the eight semifinalists, which were identified by the candidate numbers: 23, 25, 32, 38, 43, 48,
