When the Orrson Custom Farming crew rolls down the highway, it resembles a convoy more than a farm operation. Trucks, harvesters, and service trailers stretch across the interstate, bound for thousands of acres of silage each year. Behind the oversize loads and the logistics of moving a small fleet is a Wayne County farm family with roots that go back to 1820.

The Orr family has been farming in Ohio for more than two centuries. The original deed, signed by President James Monroe, still sits in Jon Orr’s safe. Of course, much has changed since the farm’s inception.

“We farm around 650 to 700 acres here in the Wayne County area,” Jon said. “It’s a simple corn and soybean rotation. But farming is just our hobby. Chopping is our business.”
