A cut above the eye sustained by a wooden children's toy could have been easily treated, but for Ian Phillips it saw him lose an eye, as an infection with a high mortality rate ate away at his face.

Mr Phillips is now suing Barwon Health, who run University Hospital Geelong.

The claims being made by he and his legal team allege doctors made a series of treatment errors and failed to act to stop the fast-moving infection, Necrotising fasciitis a rare and potentially deadly '"flesh-eating" disease.

Dr Rahul Chakrabati is an ophthalmologist, and while he did not treat Mr Phillips, he says the infection can be fatal.
