WA has the smallest GP workforce of any State as doctors treat patients with increasingly complex conditions.

The Royal College of General Practitioners’ Health of the Nation report revealed the number of doctors per 100,000 people in WA has dropped for the fourth consecutive year, with just 97 full-time equivalent GPs per 100,000 in 2024.

WA is the only State with fewer than 100 GPs per 100,000 and well below the national average, which has increased to 113 from 110 in 2023.

The Northern Territory (84) and Australian Capital Territory (91) have the lowest rates nationwide.

It means WA GPs are managing more patients per doctor than any other GP in other States, across the largest geographical jurisdiction in Australia.
