KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office has updated its Weapons and Ammunition storage policy after a road patrol deputy's agency-issued rifle was stolen out of his personal vehicle on Sept. 23.
The deputy was off-duty when the theft occurred. The sheriff's office said the deputy was at a pub on Portage Street, dining with family around 7 p.m., when someone broke into his personal vehicle and stole the rifle.
A worker at the pub saw the break-in and told the deputy, according to the Sheriff's Office. When the deputy went out to the parking lot, he found the passenger window of his vehicle had been shattered and noticed someone nearby with what appeared to be his agency-issued rifle bag slung across their body.
The deputy attempted to chase and detain the suspect
