The National Hurricane Center is tracking a tropical system in the central Atlantic that has a high probability of becoming a tropical depression within the next week.

Environmental conditions appear favorable for development, with forecasters giving the system a 70% chance of formation within 48 hours and an 80% chance within seven days.

The system is expected to move quickly west-northwestward and is projected to be near or north of the northern Leeward Islands by Thursday and Friday.

While the system has not yet been classified as a named storm, the National Hurricane Center says that it could develop into a tropical depression soon.

The next named storm would be called Jerry.

Currently, no tropical storm or hurricane warnings are in effect for U.S. territories.
