The federal government has been shut down since last Wednesday, due to Congress failing to authorize funding for the new fiscal year. A measure to extend FY 2025 funding for seven weeks (through November 21) passed the House on a mostly partisan vote, but it has repeatedly fallen short of the 60 votes required for passage in the Senate. Three Democrats have joined Republicans in supporting the continuing resolution (CR), but at least five more will have to do the same for the bill to get to the President's desk and the government to reopen. Senate Democrats proposed their own CR containing major health care initiatives -- extending Affordable Care Act subsidies and rolling back the Medicaid reforms in the GOP's One Big, Beautiful Bill -- but Republicans have easily voted that down.
