We're going to remember Trevor Lawrence's game-winning stumble touchdown to beat the Kansas City Chiefs all year. It's only been five weeks, and I can feel confident in saying it will easily remain one of the most memorable plays of the entire 2025 season.
The funny part about the whole thing?
Listen to Lawrence's triumphant post-game interview with ESPN's Laura Rutledge, and the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback revealed that he almost voluntarily ruined the awesome sequence before he had a real chance to make something out of nothing. Stick with me here.
Rutledge asked Lawrence to describe what he was thinking after falling to the ground.
Lawrence responded by noting that his first instinct upon falling to the ground was to throw the ball away. His understanding was that Chiefs defenders would be bearing down on him, and his well-trained Quarterback Brain wouldn't want him to take a brutal accidental loss of yards in that goal-to-go situation.
Just ... what?
We were almost robbed of an incredible game-winning touchdown because Lawrence was initially going to be a responsible offensive signal-caller who understood the clutch situation? I get it, but how ironic:
Fortunately for all of us watching at home (and for the Jaguars), Lawrence mentioned how quickly his thought process changed once he got up and realized there wasn't much resistance (cough, Chris Jones, cough) to him simply running across the goal line with the ball. Why throw the ball away when you can score the game-winner instead? It made perfect sense for Lawrence to roll with the punches.
It goes to show that sometimes the best football plays are the ones where you go off on a mid-play vibe.
