HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Officials with Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services are urging residents to use less water to save on sewer bills.
Sewer rates in Hawaii are set to rise 6% on Jan. 1. But the city is also changing how it calculates bills, reducing fixed fees and increasing charges based on water usage.
Essentially, the more water residents use, the more they pay.
“That’s the portion of the bill that residents have control over. You have the ability to conserve water and take other steps to impact the volumetric charge, but not the base charge,” said Roger Babcock, environmental services director.
To help residents manage costs, the city launched a new online sewer calculator . The tool allows users to set goals, track usage and see potential savings.
