[DES MOINES, Iowa] — The Des Moines Public School District is addressing concerns after Sen. Chuck Grassley questioned its hiring process. The inquiry follows the detention of the former superintendent by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) just over a week ago.

Grassley raised questions about whether the district uses E-Verify, a service from the Department of Homeland Security. This system electronically confirms an employee's information against government records to ensure they are legally employable. While 21 states require E-Verify, Iowa is not among them.

The Department of Homeland Security stated that Ian Roberts, the former superintendent, should not have had the documents needed to gain approval through E-Verify.
