Raising awareness for domestic abuse was the idea behind a candlelight vigil Tuesday night.

SafeNet Erie held the event to start their October Domestic Abuse Awareness Month campaign.

There was a remembrance ceremony for those lost to the violence, including the three Pennsylvania state police detectives killed last month.

Also, the vigil brought together survivors who shared their domestic violence stories to help educate the community about recognizing the signs.

"Because I think probably until they recognize what it was for themselves, they probably didn't even know, a lot of people think they were having a fight, they don't always recognize they have the potential to be killed, it's not always just a fight," said Robin Young, the executive director of SafeNet.
