WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — As the federal government shutdown continues, Sedgwick County officials are raising concerns about the future of federally funded programs, including the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, which provides essential nutritional support to thousands of local families.

Sedgwick County Commissioners learned this week that while food benefits loaded onto WIC cards will remain available through the end of October, funding for the staff who administer the program may run out by the end of the week.

"They assess them, determine what they are eligible for, approve them, and make those arrangements so that they can go purchase that food," Assistant Sedgwick County Manager Tim Kaufman said of the role of the program's staff.
