The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Commanders are one step closer to joining the International Brotherhood of Teamsters with the support of Mayor Ed Gainey’s office.

“The Gainey administration has long supported the right for workers to unionize, and so when we received the request to recognize the union, we gladly accepted that,” said Deputy Mayor Jake Pawlak. Advertisement

The administration announced Tuesday it voluntarily agreed to recognize the 12 commanders in their effort to form a union.

As of Tuesday, a formal notice of the commanders’ intent to unionize is posted in all Pittsburgh Police zones. Next, the mayor’s office and the police commanders will submit a joint petition to the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board.
