Flip on Western Beaver’s highlights, and it’s easy to be struck by the guys holding the football.
Freshman quarterback Amari Marshall — “an unbelievable athlete,” coach Ron Busby said — has over 600 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Junior running back Wyatt Sparbanie, a WPIAL bronze medalist in the 100-meter dash, has a little under 900 yards and a whopping 19 scores.
“It’s really easy to get enamored,” Busby said. “That’s the shiny jewelry.”
There’s no doubt those two, along with players like sophomore Avon Pressley and junior Braeden Mayo, pop on film. In fact, in Western Beaver’s 48-19 win against Riverside on Sept. 26, Sparbanie ran for 262 yards on 19 carries (a 13.8-yard average) and scored, get this, a program-record seven touchdowns.
He exited last week’s 27-12 w
