RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — A third daily roundtrip Amtrak train serving Newport News will not be arriving in 2026 as originally anticipated.
Instead, the head of the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority, or VPRA, said the service will now likely not begin until after the Long Bridge construction project is complete, which could be sometime after 2030.
The change is one of several being made to Amtrak Virginia's schedule in order to accommodate the $2.3 billion project aimed at doubling the number of tracks crossing the Potomac River. When finished, the hope is the bridge improves the reliability and on-time performance of trains.
Norfolk is also poised to lose its early morning and early afternoon trains because of the work.
