**Europe Faces Urgent Call to Defend Its Airspace** Europe has received a critical warning regarding the need to safeguard its airspace amid what EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen describes as a "pattern of growing threats" linked to hybrid warfare. In a recent statement, von der Leyen asserted, "Make no mistake. The recent incursions in our skies are part of a pattern of growing threats. It’s time to call it by its name. This is hybrid warfare. Europe must get the capacity to respond and protect our skies." The warning comes as Europe remains on high alert following a series of suspected Russian drone incursions. The situation escalated with the flight of nearly two dozen unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into Poland, with additional sightings reported across northern Europe, including Germany, Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands. Despite these incidents, Moscow has consistently denied any involvement. However, tensions heightened when French authorities detained a Russian shadow fleet tanker off the western coast of France, amid allegations that it was being used to launch disruptive drones. In response to the seizure, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed it was merely a distraction from France's internal political issues. Von der Leyen emphasised the need for a unified response, stating, "Russia wants to sow division. We have to answer with unity." She further elaborated that addressing Russia's hybrid warfare requires a shift in mindset, saying, "Tackling Russia's hybrid war is not only about traditional defence. This requires a new mind-set for all of us. We can either shy away and watch Russian threats escalate, or we meet them with unity, deterrence and resolve." As Europe grapples with these challenges, the call for enhanced defensive capabilities and a cohesive strategy to counteract potential threats has never been more pressing.
