BERKELEY SPRINGS — Decoy 81 was honored with a memorial granite bench in front of the Morgan County Courthouse on Oct. 7. Families and friends of the six men who died in the crash gathered to celebrate their lives and remember their sacrifice as they served their country.

Decoy 81 was a training mission that took place on Oct. 7, 1992. Lt. Col. Alfred Steinberger III, Captain Dallas Adams Jr., Master Sgt. George Griffith, Technical Sgt. John Funkhouser, Staff Sgt. James Henchman and Staff Sgt. Fred Jones took off in a plane from the 167th Air National Guard in what was supposed to be a simple flight. After the plane stuck the power lines along Spruce Pine Hollow in Hedgesville, the plane crashed into a house along Fairview Drive.
