Another long, hot, generally dry summer came to a sudden end last weekend, when a violent storm rolled over the Valley, dumping nearly 3 inches of rain on Scottsdale.

As was the case in monsoon events for years, many city streets were flooded.

While the storm was merely frightening for most drivers, it was fatal for Ander Polanco.

The 38-year-old man was delivering food in south Scottsdale and talked to his family just after 6 p.m. Sept. 26.

Ninety minutes later, according to Sgt. Allison Sempsis of the Scottsdale Police Department, “officers responded to reports of a vehicle submerged in water near 77th Street and Garfield.

“The vehicle was located in Vista Del Camino Park, where the passenger compartment was fully flooded, with only the trunk visible above water.
